A new online Master of Legal Studies degree program, offered by the Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University through Drexel University Online, will provide professionals with knowledge and skills to address regulatory and ethical issues in compliance. The program offers opportunities for specialization in regulatory compliance in the delivery of health care and operation of NCAA approved athletics programs.

Taught by full-time law faculty, the 30-credit post-baccalaureate MLS degree program can be completed on either part- or full-time basis. The program is currently accepting applications for its inaugural class entering in January 2014. This is the first fully online program offered through the law school.

“In a changing economic environment, it is important to offer students diverse options for advancing their careers,” said Roger Dennis, dean of the law school. “The master of legal studies degree helps working professionals and those who wish to change careers to move relatively quickly into the management suite. There, they can offer useful insights to an organization’s leadership team about managing risk and meeting regulatory requirements.”

Students may pursue a general master’s degree or specialize in either health care compliance or National Collegiate Athletic Association compliance and sports law.

The certificate program in NCAA compliance provides students with an understanding of NCAA rules that apply to collegiate athletics programs. Students will gain an understanding of contracts, labor law, antitrust, tax, torts, remedies, arbitration and constitutional law as these apply to collegiate athletics programs. The 15-credit curriculum includes general law courses, focused training in NCAA compliance and in-depth study of crucial issues in collegiate sports regulation.

The certificate program in health care compliance provides professionals with an understanding of regulations that apply to organizations, institutions and individuals who deliver health care services. Courses cover health care regulations, policies, malpractice and insurance tort reform and other critical issues. The 15-credit curriculum includes general law courses, focused training in ethics and compliance and in-depth study of crucial issues in health care regulation. Students may apply credits toward completion of the master’s degree in legal studies.

“Business organizations have a rapidly growing need for employees who understand the legal and regulatory landscape in which they operate, and yet few law schools offer programs that give students a thorough grounding in compliance,” said Aimeé Kahan, director of the master of legal studies program and assistant teaching professor. “Our program draws on faculty who have tremendous depth of expertise in this increasingly important professional arena and gives students the opportunity to master legal concepts and their practical application.”
